Harold's Chicken #28 moved to Downtown Waterloo in the spring of 2017! The rich history of this Chicago based southern favorite found its way to the Cedar Valley! The casual dining restaurant can be found near the Walnut Court neighborhood, just across from Lincoln Park.

Personally I like fried chicken; always have, probably always will. Locally we have a few national chain options such as Kentucky Fried Chicken, Popeye's, and Chick-Fil-A, but nothing can compare to the fried chicken you will be served at Harold's! Thick and juicy meat, perfectly seasoned and fried perfectly; light and crispy.

They have a unique menu. Of course there are the traditional chicken dinner varieties, but in addition there a few hard to find in the Cedar Valley Southern favorite sides! Harold's offers fried green tomatoes, okra and gizzards! Everything is made fresh and served with by local friendly staff. This is an add to your restaurant wish list!

Iowa Irish Fest is the premier Irish cultural event in the state. Held each August and located downtown with "home base" in Lincoln Park, you can enjoy music, food, beer, merchandise, and more beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday. A must see is the Highland Games where you can see athletes compete in a variety of heavy athletic field events such as the sheaf toss, hammer throw, stone put, and more. Some of the most amazing national Irish musical talents perform throughout the festival. Also offered is a family fun area, a 5K Run/Walk, and Sunday morning outdoor Mass in the park. If you've never attended, you should add it to your "must do" summer list next year. You won't be disappointed; it is truly a well put-together, class event.

Growing up and raising my children here, the library has always been and remains to be one of my favorite go-to places in Waterloo! As our society has evolved, so has the mission of the public library and its ability to serve the residents of Waterloo. Truth be known, my favorite thing to do at the library is still to check out a stack of books!

But the library has so much more to offer. Did you know that you can borrow DVD's for the whole family, computer games, music CD's, magazines, audio books, ebooks, stream movies, download 3 free songs a week and browse unlimited digital copies of magazines! I know its crazy - what you have been missing, right?!

Don't forget the library still offers weekly story time, monthly puppet shows and special events for the kids. The library also does a great job offering special events, along with classes and workshops for children, teens and adults. These include Family Movie Nights, Lego competitions, Mindcraft instructions and computer classes for adults. The opportunities almost seem endless! So when will you be making a visit to the library?

Growing up in Waterloo, there were certain downtown establishments that each generation can point out. Some continue business as usual, others have been re-purposed to serve today's population, The Newton's I remember was a jewelry store, in fact, team member Barb Adams remembers ordering her class ring at the downtown store!

Newtons Jewelers, a family owned and operated business, closed its doors in November of 2007 after 93 years in business which left this historic downtown building vacant. The building was re-purposed with a sleek remodel and is now Newton's Paradise Cafe which offers today's patrons a new way of making memories! Newton's boasts, "Familiar Food, with an Unfamiliar Twist" (and the tenderloin is huge!). A favorite spot to meet with friends and family for a quick bite, or to sit and chat over a patio lunch or dinner. Newton's is open Monday-Saturday, 6:00 am - 9:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am - 4:00pm. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.
