It's really getting too cold out to play golf outside, but fortunately South Hills Golf Course will be installing their inside golf simulator soon so I can still swing my clubs even while it is snowing. My girlfriends and I will usually rent it for a couple hours to play nine holes. My husband takes lessons from the golf Professional, Monte Meyer, and is looking forward to using the simulator with Monte during the winter months so he can measure improvements in his game.

Galleria de Paco is one of the best restaurant secrets in Waterloo! We went there Wednesday to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary and were greeted by the most gracious host and were seated immediately. We chose to just have appetizers and a drink in the Catacomb Lounge which is the basement. The food and drinks were outstanding! Next time I am going to make sure I have a larger appetite so I can have the four course meal that is served in the main seating area. It is just under $30.00 and looks outstanding!

Wow! What a great place to have a craft beer and a bite to eat! We stopped there the other night and were impressed with the selection of beers and the fun menu of food. There are different seating areas that will meet whatever your need is. There is even an area just for kids to have fun.

Located in the historic Russell-Lamson building in downtown Waterloo, the Brown Bottle offers some of the best Italian food in the area. My personal favorite is the Chicken Parmesan and twice baked potatoes--something you must definitely try. Pizza is phenomenal as well as the Prime Rib, Lasagna, and more! Plenty of seating for a group or for a more intimate meal, ask to sit in the Library area, loaded with hundreds of books to separate seating. The Brown Bottle is also a great place to host a group event with room for large groups and parties as well. Reservations are available with immediate seating also available, depending on availability.

A new outreach program in Waterloo is hoping to bridge the gap between Waterloo residences and the Waterloo Police Department. Spring of 2017 launched a new program in Waterloo hoping to make Sgt. Brian Hoelscher a familiar face to locals.

Sgt. Brian Hoelscher will be keeping office hours in the building at 205 Adams St., in the heart of a residential area of Waterloo. The community partnership is hoping to make the office a convenient, comfortable and confidential place for neighbors to stop in and ask questions, file a complaint or simply touch base with an officer.

When time allows the officer is planning on mingling with residents on foot or on bicycle throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. This movement is hoping to reach all residents-making them realize all communities members matter.

Schools are about out for the local towns. With a few snow days to make up this year, the kids won't have much longer to push that pencil or, these days, Chromebooks. It's always a parent's nightmare within a few days of the kids on vacation you hear, " I'm bored". I know it is for myself. Therefore plan ahead and see what's going on in your area for entertainment. Tuesdays the local theater has $5.00 shows with free popcorn. The swimming pools will be open, a sure sign that summer is here and a great way to cool off, and don't forget your sunscreen. What are we up to now, spf1000? Drink plenty of water especially out doing yard work on those hot humid Iowa days; that's what makes the corn grow tall. Lastly, just enjoy it; the school bells will once again be ringing and old man winter will be here all to soon.

Yes, this little pesky but mighty bug has made its way across the river and into Iowa. This insect known as Emerald Ash Borer will basically suck the life out of your Ash tree, causing it to die. The metallic green beetle is native to East China and was imported to the USA within the wood of shipping crates from China. The first signs of this bug was found in Detroit, MI in 2002 and is now found in 18 states and Canada. You can put chemicals into your tree to try to save it, but soon the bug will most likely win, leaving you with a dead tree. It is important to know what tree or trees are on your property and RE/MAX Home Group has incorporated a form signed by the seller to let you know the status of trees on their property that they are selling. If you're buying a home because of the maturity of the trees, the shade and beauty, sure to check out what species it really is. Beware of the Ash Borer!

The Grout Museum is planning to have an exhibit on the Korean War. I think this will be a wonderful tribute to the men and women that served in that war and to the families of those that served. The exhibit will be very detailed with pictures taken by the service men and women on display, and some actual guns, rifles, and mortar from that war. There will also be testimonials from those that served talking of the temperature, the smell of rice paddies, and what it was like to fight and live there. The exact release date has not been released.
