    Just east of Des Moines a mere five miles lies one of Iowa's youngest major parks-- Yellow Banks Park. The park boasts rare loess soil bluffs and a rich Native American Heritage. Destroyed by the railway in the 1800s were a large cave and Paleo Indian burial ground. Recently Polk County has set out to redevelop the park in an effort to preserve this historical area. The park is a 517-acre oasis featuring a pond, campground, picnic areas, trails, ball fields and play areas. The pond is located to the rear of the park, making it quiet and secluded but also a challenge to get to for some. But it's worth the trip. The campgrounds are also unique in that they are on a first come-first serve basis. The summer may be on the down-ward climb, but there is always time to discover this unique park.

    The Runnells Community Ice Skating Rink is open and the ice is fresh. While the rink is a fun and inviting place for families, there are some precautions that the city of Runnells asks users to follow. Skating is only permitted when the gate on Brown Street is open and always only skate at your own risk.
