Waterloo Schools have chosen to put into place a voluntary enrichment plan as their continuous learning plan. This means the days of school already lost due to the schools being shut down because of COVID-19 do not need to be made up. The plan will start for the students on April 15, 2020. Monday, April 13 and Tuesday, April 14 will be used by staff to collaborate, finalize preparations, and for professional development. Additional details will be sent on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 to the families of these students.

My children have had incredible opportunities and experiences while attending Waterloo Schools. While attending an event, I loved seeing a variety of ethnicities and cultures represented within the staff but within the student body as well. We have found the staff to be very interested and dedicated to being certain the children are given the attention needed to excel. From sports to music to theater programs, Waterloo Schools have much to offer!

Kudos out to one of our own... Waterloo Community Schools' Irving Elementary was recently honored "The Healthiest School in Iowa"! Way to go - I am sure this has taken strategic planning, hard work and all hands on deck - but what an accomplishment for our students here in the Cedar Valley!

Irving Elementary is nestled in the heart of town offering before-school exercise club. Going the "extra step" the school introduced heart rate monitors into physical education classes and eliminated "unhealthy snacks". Just another way Waterloo Community Schools continues to perform, global thinking - limitless choices.

In this coffee driven society why would we expect our area high school students to not capitalize on the benefits of a hard days work or a good cup of java??

Java West offers students and staff at Waterloo West High School a unique wake up call right inside the building for students and teachers to enjoy! This coffee shop opens daily - serving up hot and cold coffee as well as smoothies, cookies and more! The coffee shop has been around for several years but has recently expanded - most recently being completely ran by special needs students at Waterloo West High School. 9th and 10th grade students run the coffee shop - even making deliveries to classrooms.

The mindset behind the business model of the coffee shop is to help the students develop independence, life skills and to help prepare them for a job after high school. Java West definitely offers West High Students a unique opportunity - those running the shop and those reaping the benefits to the shops success.

Dr. Walter Cunningham School of Excellence is just one of many new elementary schools in the Waterloo Community School district. Built in 2002, Cunningham school features state of the art facilities and excellent academic opportunities for all students. Dr. Walter Cunningham a long time teacher, principal and mentor for the Waterloo Community School District, had a vision of excellence for the students and teachers in the Waterloo Schools. One of Walt's favorite sayings; "If it is to be, it is up to me", has been adopted as the school's motto. Stop by the front desk of the school anytime to visit or volunteer.

Built on the former Black Hawk School grounds, but facing the side street of Sheldon Ave instead of Downing Ave. Black Hawk, a two story school, was opened in 1950 and served children in grades K-6 for many years. Then in around 1976 the district made grade level changes where the elementary students will go from K-5 and then over to middle school from grades 6 to 8, and then area high schools would serve 9-12th. The new Fred Becker opened in 2011 as a one level pod type school with several wings. Some may recall the huge rock that sat on the southwest side of the school grounds. Legend has it the contractor dug a huge hole and pushed this boulder which was as tall underground as it was above (I'd say 16 feet tall at least) into this hole and buried it for reasons I'm not sure of. It was a landmark for sure.

As a long time resident of Waterloo, I have had the opportunity to attend both Hoover Middle School and West High. My son is now attending Orange Elementary and I couldn't say enough great things about our experience there. It has an excellent teaching staff, beautiful new building and a close knit neighborhood community that truly supports Orange Elementary. We are looking forward to continuing our son's education in the Waterloo Public Schools!

Orange Elementary was chosen by Franklin Covey as a Lighthouse School. There are only two in the state of Iowa and we have one in Waterloo. This award is given to schools that model good leadership and serve as models of leadership and mentors to other schools.

This is a family friendly area and a place I have called home for the last 25 years. You'll find that many families raised their children here and now those grown children have moved back with their families to build new memories. This established neighborhood features the brand new Fred Becker Elementary and Central Middle Schools with plenty of sidewalks to take the family or dog for an evening walk. Enjoy a fall Friday evening at a high school football game at Central Middle Schools Memorial Stadium. A great place to call home.
