    The historic Highland Park and Oak Park neighborhoods are minutes away from Downtown Des Moines and offer affordable homes with character, beautiful yards and great neighborhood restaurants and shops. Exciting new establishments have opened in the neighborhood joining well established businesses.

    A revitalization program will be investing in the neighborhood. A recently formed nonprofit is jointly funded by the City and County will be allocating $2.5 million in the first year between four pilot neighborhoods in Des Moines. Highland Park/Oak Park is one of these neighborhoods and it will be exciting to watch as the neighborhood continues to benefit from the investment.

    I recommend taking an afternoon to stop by for a coffee at The Slow Down coffee shop which recently opened in the old Hiland Park Hardware store. If you enjoy Mid Century furniture as much as I do a must stop would be Tesoro Casegoods and Oddities. Enjoy a cozy Italian mainstay, Chuck's Restaurant. Serving excellent Italian food since 1956. Walk around the neighborhood and you will find an antique store, record store, a fantastic bakery and a new mercantile store is opening soon.
