  • Icon Donuts & Sweetery has two locations in Cedar Valley, both with drive-thru or dine-in options. Enjoy a freshly brewed coffee or selection of beverages with your donut or baked good. What I especially love about Icon is the vegan options they serve every Friday-Sunday. It's such a nice treat for my kids to get to enjoy donuts and still stick to our plant-based lifestyle. Or for those who have allergies, Icon does a really good job at keeping things clean and separate. This place is fun for all ages - don't miss out on the sweet treats at Icon!

Tour new construction and newly remodeled properties during the 2021 Cedar Valley Parade of Homes from September 16th-19th. There are many beautiful homes to tour in both Waterloo and Cedar Falls, including both large and small. You will not only be able to see what types of homes the Cedar Valley has to offer, but will also get to see all of the different neighborhoods that Cedar Valley residents call home. This parade raises funds toward Cedar Valley Home Builders Association scholarships, which go to two deserving area students annually that will study for careers in the building trades industry at Northeast Iowa colleges and universities.

Due to COVID concerns, my husband and I try to limit our exposure to others as much as we can. We do limited in-person shopping, are careful to wash our hands often, wear masks to respect others, and have gone to only one restaurant, for the most part, since the beginning of the pandemic. One of the events in our lives that we miss the most is going to church in person. While we miss it terribly, we feel it is too risky to go to an in-person service. So, blessed be the internet! We still tithe to our parish with automatic withdrawals from our checking account but have found joy in being able to watch the church service on YouTube. We have even watched services from different parishes in different states and have seen so many beautiful churches and heard so many beautiful sermons. I have to admit that we have become comfortable with this way of watching services. We even sit on the couch with coffee in hand and sometimes we are even in our jammies! Let's praise the Lord together but let's wait until I have my coffee cup in hand!
  • Our local boutiques are live streaming in order to reach a larger market and increase their sales. And it's working! I've been watching some of these and have definitely purchased products because of what I've seen them live stream. It's great! Some of the clothing boutiques will even try the clothes on in front of you so you can see how they fit. They may have models with the different sizes on, and they will often show you what to match the item up to like a top with pants or belts or even shoes. Some offer jewelry too and will show which jewelry works best with an outfit. It's like a little fashion show just for me. You can order right then by texting or emailing them and then go pick up the purchase that has been already packaged for you. That is great in this contactless world we are currently living in. Some of the ones I've been watching lately are Beautiful Mess Boutique, Vintage Iron Company, Finery Bridal and Trend Boutique, Bonita Tings Quality Consignment, and Cup of Joe (for my coffee inspirations). I love our community and all it has to offer, both in-person and online.
  • Scott Jordan of Scott's Electric is my favorite local electrician! Being a Realtor, I often need an electrician to remedy a situation to complete the sale of a property. Scott has been my "go-to" guy. He always responds to my request for service or a quote in quick order with a fair price no matter if the job is large or small. And in real estate, there are many small jobs that make a big difference in being able to complete a purchase. He is professional with clients and always comes in with a smile. I love working with him.

I put 20 gallons of gas in my car today and received a $40 discount because of my HyVee fuel saver! Nice! Thank you HyVee! They have this program where you can get money applied to your HyVee fuel saver card when you either purchase certain items or sometimes they will offer a greater incentive if you purchase a certain dollar amount. For example, they may offer .02 of fuel saver points if you purchase a certain item. Or it may be .10 or .25 cents. It varies. Then when you get gas at a participating gas station you can apply the fuel saver dollars as a discount off each gallon of gas purchased up to a limit of 20 gallons. I don't buy anything I wouldn't normally buy to accumulate fuel saver money. I shop for what I need or want and just keep adding up the points! Year to date I have saved $173.76 on gas! The best part is that I love shopping at HyVee because they have a great variety of products in large and small size offerings, a deli, bakery, great meat counter, a large wine and spirits selection, a clean, well-lit store, and a friendly smile in every aisle.

  • The Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley is a strong center always posting volunteer opportunities. Like so many other communities, there are many opportunities. Especially now during the middle of this COVID-19 disaster. We are blessed to have so many people step forward and help with all of the opportunities. One of the big requests right now is for sewing volunteers to make essential service personnel the needed masks and gowns. Individuals and companies are stepping forward and fulfilling this need. For details, call the Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley at 272-2087, or go to www.vccv.org.

  • I know there are a lot of pet lovers out there and the Cedar Valley Humane Society is a great support for the animals in our community. They say that more than 2000 animals are cared for by the CVHS each year. They are dedicated to building healthy relationships between people and animals. They take in lost, abandoned, and owner-surrendered animals. I have several friends that have adopted pets and visit the CVHS several times a year just to give love to the animals that are currently being housed.

It's springtime here in the Cedar Valley. No need to go to Pella when you can just look around the town and see all the spring flowers in bloom. Tulips, daffodils, and crocus are just a few that I can see out my own window in my backyard. Trees are starting to bud out and here come the allergies for a lot of people. I, too, suffer from seasonal allergies. The bike trails are once again busy with people, as are the tennis courts. Did you know you can play for free at Central Middle School? Tucked way up in the back of the school on the hill are about six courts to play on.
  • The Cedar Valley Nature Trail is a haven for anyone that likes to hike, bike, walk, skate, or even ski. There are close to 100 miles of paved trail and this number keeps growing with the more recent expansion of the trail through Hudson and then south of Waterloo off Shaulis Road. In addition to the paved trail there are areas with crushed stone and dirt trails for those with dirt bikes. It is a wonderful trail to travel from town to town, event to event, around lakes, parks, and shopping.

It's all good in this hood. There are lots of things to do around here even in the winter months. From hitting the sled hills, bowling, movies, musicals up at the Gallagher. Winter doesn't have to be boring and long. Drive around any neighborhood and view homeowners Christmas displays. Some even have contest for the best lighted display. Load up the car, grab some hot cocoa and enjoy yourself. Who knows, you might even hear a caroler signing your favorite holiday tune.
