Have you stopped into Rudy's Tacos lately? If not, you should! They source their menu items from local vendors and it is always fresh and delicious! I was there on a Monday and they have the beef or chicken 1/2 mucho nacho on special. It is my favorite! They have specials every day. Go check it out!

The Cedar Valley may have a lot of cornfields around, but we also do have some nice parks that offer up opportunities to swim, boat, and enjoy water activities as well as hiking, biking, camping, grilling, and other such fun. If you haven't visited yet, be sure to hop in the car and take a drive around to see what it offers and plan a time to get outside and enjoy some much-needed time in nature.

If you haven't been to Single Speed in Downtown Waterloo lately, they have a great new menu that offers eclectic items to dine on. In addition, they also have some new beers and your favorites on tap in their beer hall. It is COVID friendly as they have patrons spaced out accordingly. It is worth a trip and to check them out.

Winter Wonderloo in downtown Waterloo will look a little different in 2020, but it will still be just as fun! The tree lighting ceremony will take place in Newton’s Park at 6:30 p.m. on November 28th. Instead of seeing Santa in person, he will join the celebration virtually to talk with the local kids. While waiting for Santa, a holiday drive in and hot cocoa will be available to enjoy.

You can also extend the festivities into your home with a take-home craft! A virtual 5K will replace the regular in-person event, and a Downtown Holiday Scavenger Hunt will start on November 23rd and run through November 28th. Local holiday shopping is also made easier this year in downtown Waterloo with Shop Downtown Saturdays 2020. Pop-up shops will be joining the current downtown retailers from November 7th-December 19th. Vendors such as Brown’s Shoe Fit Co., Jewels, LuLit’s Hair Essence, Luxe Life, Muddy Pirate Coffee Traders, One of a Kind Design, Sherry’s Shaggy Shack, and Winter Farmers Market will set up shop this holiday season for all of your holiday gift and home décor needs.

As always, you can purchase Downtown Waterloo gift certificates in person or online for those hard to shop for friends and relatives. Be sure to shop local for the holidays and all year long!

  • Being able to return your empty cans and bottles for the five-cent redemption fee has changed recently in that the locations that accept empty cans and bottles have become very limited. That is true if you want the five-cent redemption fee for yourself. However, there are many locations that are accepting empty cans and bottle donations to fund their cause. I've found many schools, boy scout troops, and people collecting for cancer research and other health concerns send notices out of when they are collecting and where to drop off the empty cans and bottles. I like to spread it around. My last donation of cans and bottles was for an educational program for trap shooting training for young students. It feels good to donate to great causes.
  • The size of the student body enrollment at Waterloo Christian School has increased dramatically over the last several years. It has increased by about 50% since Principal Ryan Hall began his leadership in 2017. They now serve nearly 200 students! My grandchildren attend this school and love it! The ratio of students to teachers is small which provides the children with great learning opportunities. The school provides programs for preschool through 12th grade.
  • It is always important to get out and vote whether it be for the President or other offices or issues and this year voting seems to be drawing in more participation than normal. That is all good! There are plenty of opportunities to vote in Waterloo. You can go directly to the Black Hawk County Courthouse and vote in person prior to the November 3 election, you can vote with an absentee ballot, or you can vote in person at your assigned polling location for your district. A postcard has been mailed to voters informing them of their polling location as some of them have changed because of reduced staffing due to pandemic concerns. So Waterloo is a great place to be able to have your vote count.

One of our newest favorites is Amigos, located at 1415 E. San Marnan Drive, near Target. They offer a huge selection of entrees and drink options. Make sure to try one of my faves, Fajita Texanas which offers steak, chicken, and shrimp. So much food, you'll make two-three meals of it...or just one if you have a big appetite. Stop by and enjoy dining outdoors, in the large bar area, or the dining room. Your tummy will thank you!

There is no better place to spend a hot summer day than our very own Lost Island Waterpark! You can spend an entire day here and not run out of fun things to do. On top of the awesome water slides, wave pool, and lazy river, they also have mini-golf, go-karts, and zip lining for anyone hunting for some adventure. This is fun for all ages and any occasion and, of course, my favorite slide is the Ta Katipo...let's race!
