I'm so excited for this spring and summer. One of my favorite places to bike and hike is George Wyth Memorial State Park in Waterloo. This park opened in 1940 and was changed to its current name in 1956. There are beautiful trails, multiple lakes, camping, swimming, fishing, and so much more to be enjoyed in this gorgeous state park that consists of 1200 acres on the edge of Waterloo.

Maple Lanes has been in the Cedar Valley since 1959. Since then it has expanded and changed ownership. In February 2020 Maple Lanes burned down and was rebuilt bigger and better. It is now called Maples Lanes and Kingpin Social. I hung out there recently and it is pretty amazing what they have done to update this bowling alley. There is a separate bar area and even an upstairs now. Bring your friends or family and have a wonderful time at Maple Lanes all year round.

Run, don't walk to Hickory Hills Campground during the holiday season. For $10 per carload of people, local companies decorate camp sights. They are filled with elves, gingerbread men, grinches, Snoopy, and so much more. It is open Friday-Sunday from 4:00-10:00 p.m. Super cute and it puts you in the holiday spirit.

The Five Sullivan Center has been renamed the Waterloo Convention Center. It has been undergoing a massive renovation that includes new floors, walls, ceilings, lighting, concession areas, escalators, and a full exterior renovation. They are planning to have it completed by the end of 2021 and are currently holding small events in the parts that are completed. This is a great investment to improve the Downtown Waterloo Area.

If you are near downtown Waterloo on a nice afternoon, be sure to stop at Anton's Volks Haus and enjoy a beverage and sit on the shaded patio to enjoy the birds. It has a wonderful vibe of outdoor games, long wooded tables, and chairs that invite people to gather together and chat. So worth a stop.

If you are looking for home improvement needs and haven't checked out the Restore in the Crossroads area, you should. The store is for donation only but has a large selection of furniture, fixtures, cabinets, plumbing and electrical supplies, and so much more. They have a lot of bathroom fixtures and windows as well. It is a great place to buy a single or few items at a great discount when making small home improvements. I recently moved to a new home. When we were packing we needed boxes so I went to the
U-Haul on University Avenue. I purchased several size boxes that are great for moving and have handles and they said if we don't use some of them we can return for a full refund, and that is just what happened. I returned several unused and they were timely, polite, and friendly. I would highly recommend them for your moving needs.

If you like going to the farmer's markets on Saturdays to pick up fresh, local produce - that can be a great way to start off a fun weekend. But if you are traveling or too busy at that time, another great option is to submit an order to a local farm throughout the week and pick up your food at another time. One such example of this option, is Hoffman Produce Farms, you are able to submit an order during the week, and pick it up on a designated day, so you aren't left without delightful local food, just because you can't go or forgot to go on a Saturday morning. Nice to have options!
  • Cattle Congress is an annual event in Waterloo that brings art and rural life to the Cedar Valley. You can meet with vendors, go to the petting zoo and see farm animals, see a large variety of horses, cows, etc. There are motocross events, amusement park rides for the kids as well as food vendors to offer up delicious fried fair foods. There are photo/art competitions, live music and dancing are also on the menu. It's nice to know that there are some local options for summer/fall fun that don't require a long drive away.
  • Waterloo Community Playhouse is a great location to watch local actors in classic and modern plays. This fall featured the most common play called "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder, based on a small American Town in 1913. Later this fall, their offerings will include The Rainbow Fish Musical and the very popular Elf The Musical. Clearly, they are considering both great plays and musicals from past and present in their selections. Definitely worth checking out.
