    You can enjoy the beautiful trails that connect Waukee to other trails and ride, run, or walk as far as you choose. Many of the trails are along creeks and offer a break from the sun as you meander through nature. You'll find that there are parks along trails every couple of miles. Stop and take a break, or make a park a destination for the kids to explore. Check out the link to find the trails and parks near you! The Waukee Trailhead is a popular spot for people to meet and head out on their bikes. Popular out-and-back destinations are Dallas Center, Minburn to the north, and Adel, Redfield (they have a great breakfast at the VFW on Saturday mornings) to the west. You can do the full loop and get in 75-100 miles depending on your fitness. See you out there!

    My kids attended Grant Ragan Elementary and Fox Creek Park next to it allowed us to have a great walking path to school, or for family walks in the evening. My toddler loves to stop by the Little Library while his siblings are playing soccer on the field. And they all enjoy the splash pad during summer break! Pickleball and a tennis court are also there to utilize. It is the third biggest park in Waukee and we enjoy it all year long!

    What's In A Sign?
    Things have really changed since I graduated from Waukee with a class of 77 people. University was a gravel road, and you could ride your bike on Hickman, Hwy 6, to Adel to go swimming. One thing that hasn't changed, Alice's Road. From just east of the high school, on the now paved four-lane called SE University Ave, you turn north at the stoplight where the sign reads SE Alice's Road. There was a debate about changing the name of Alice's Road, but the uproar from the longtime Waukee residents wouldn't have it. Why?

    Alice's Spaghetti Land had been a fixture of Waukee since Alice Nezzi opened the restaurant in 1949 as a Mom and Pop Italian restaurant on the dirt road in the barren northeast side of Waukee. Alice's family immigrated here to work in the Shuler mine. They employed many of the women of the coal mining community and many from town, including my mom. Alice worked at the restaurant into her 80's. Her nephew, Jim Nizzi, took over most of the operations in the '90s and continued until it closed in 2004. Jim still prepares the special recipes for special occasions like the Waukee Historical Society's Annual Alice's Night.

    What's in a name? In this instance, it's the local history of a woman and her family that served the families of the Shuler mine area and grew into a local favorite for the Waukee area.

    Kettlestone is 1500 acres compromised of 10 distinct districts. It will offer shopping, dining, entertainment, parks, ponds, and trails. It will also offer housing options from single family residential, multi-family rowhouses, and multi-family stacked; medium and high.

    Kettlestone will have a trail that connects to the existing trails making bicycling a wonderful outdoor activity to be enjoyed by many. It will also have areas that are designated to conservation. Definitely a desirable neighborhood for any potential resident of Waukee.
