Managed by Muscatine County Conservation Board, the Muscatine Environmental Learning Center has plenty of activities for you. The classrooms host many continuing education opportunities for young and old alike. There are about 100 acres of outdoor fun with walking trails and stocked trout fishing ponds. There are nature observation areas, live wildlife exhibits, and natural prairie grasslands. It is a great place to walk and enjoy nature!

Lock and Dam 16 is part of the U.S. Corps of Engineers Rock Island District inland water system. It is located right across the bridge at Muscatine, Iowa. The open-air platform viewing area is a great place to watch the industrial barges, passenger steamboats, and pleasure crafts lock through in the summertime. It's also a popular area for bald eagles to hang out in the trees and fish in the winter, sometimes in plain view of the platform.

Open to the public at 8:00 a.m., Lock and Dam 16 has park bench seating areas and a restroom. There is a tall chain-link security fence that surrounds the area to prohibit access to the river and makes it safe for all ages to enjoy. Quick, easy access makes this a must-see site when visiting Muscatine.

The Running River Trail System is a 10 mile long biking and pedestrian path in Muscatine. The mostly paved system starts east of Muscatine on Solomon Ave and ends in South Muscatine County at Deep Lakes Park. Ride along the scenic Mississippi River or stroll and explore the Deep Lakes portion of the trail. The system connects to many of the public parks and special areas. Weed Park, Riverside, and Kent Stein parks to name a few with many more local historic sites along the way. Just another great resource Muscatine has to offer. No better place to cool off in Downtown Muscatine. Bring your swim suits and splash around the "mist". The center stack of the fountain shoots water up to 30 feet in the air along with four other canons streaming to the middle. An additional four other jets supply the mist. In Riverside Park, The Mississippi Mist Fountain is open from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. and is lit up at night. It's free!

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 the West Hill Historic District of Muscatine is loaded with history and beautiful homes. The extravagant homes built by early industrialists, land brokers and socialites range from Victorian Eclectic to Italianate styles. Houses were built in the period between 1839-1958. To start your tour take W 2nd St and continue west until you intersect Pine St. Explore between Pine and Ash St then W 2nd and W 4th to see how many historic homes you can find. A great time to walk is in the fall but don't forget it's called West Hill for a reason!

The Muscatine Aquatic Center is located in Weed Park and is open to the public during summer hours. The park has multiple water slides, diving boards and other water attractions. Summer fun for all ages. Daily fees are $3 per child and $4 for adults. It's a dollar more for non-residents. My kids enjoy the drop off slide the most and say "it's a long drop!".

Located in Muscatine and opened in 2018 the Merrill is a multi million dollar four star boutique hotel and conference center that has 122 rooms with the majority of them having fabulous river views. Featuring two presidential suites that have 3 bedrooms, 3 baths and a dining area with fireplace. The lobby has a restaurant, bar and gift/sundries shop. It also has a pool and fitness center. Located inside the Merrill, the Howe Conference Center has 12 business meeting rooms and is accepted by the International Association of Conference Centers. Through out the hotel you'll enjoy viewing the art provided by The Muscatine Art Center and other local artists. This is a great place to stay whether you're in Muscatine for business or just getting away for a long weekend.

Melon City Criterium is the second leg of a trifecta of biking events over Memorial Day Weekend. The race is held every year at Weed Park in Muscatine. Nothing but legit riders in this race with a lot of wheel to wheel action and team riding. This locally sponsored event is great for spectators and free of charge. Just one of the many fun things to do in Muscatine's Weed Park.

Here's another great reason to live in Muscatine! Local riders once again will have the privledge of dipping their tires in the Mississippi River at home this year. Come join in the celebration which will include live music, street dancing, food and a lot of family entertainment. The ride across Iowa starts in Glenwood on the 23rd of July and ends in Muscatine on the 30th.
