The kids had a blast! Waterloo Public Works held an open house to show off their facilities and awesome trucks. They have whole rooms dedicated to watching all of the street cameras throughout the city, which allow them to monitor traffic and call for help if there is an accident. We were also able to check out the shop where all of the local street signs are made and the garages where all of the vehicles are stored, repaired, and maintained. There is so much more technology involved in the sanitation department than you might think. The garbage trucks each have a sophisticated GPS system to track their routes and when/if they picked up someone's refuse bin. They can also take pictures of a bin that someone forgot to put out to prove they didn't just pass you by. The salt spreader trucks are programmed to put out just enough salt to keep the roads safe, but not too much that it goes into the nearby grass and water. Even the street sweeper trucks are more complicated than you may think. Some of them are gigantic vacuums coming down your street, sucking up everything in their path. The best part for the kids was getting to ride in the trucks! The public works employees took the kids around the campus in a salt spreader truck, a garbage truck, and a street sweeper truck. If you and your kid were brave enough, you could even go way up high in the bucket of a truck they use to repair and replace street lights! Keeping our city clean and streets safe is an important and difficult task. Thank you to all of the public works employees that make it happen!
