This program offers at 100% exception from property taxation on the first $75,000 of actual value. This exemption is good for a period of five years and is only valid for new construction owner-occupied properties. It is not an automatic program so an application must be submitted to the City of Altoona.

    Demolition and reconstruction of 8th St SW has begun. The first phase of this construction project will cover the roadway from the Highway 65 bypass to 34th Ave SW. Two-way traffic will continue but lane closures will be in place and traffic will have to shift to accommodate the construction crews. Since this is a very busy stretch of roadway finding an alternative route is strongly suggested. Construction is expected to last until November 2020.

    After The Storm
    The City of Altoona will begin collecting tree and limb debris from yesterday's storm. Official storm clean up has begun and the brush drop off site will be open all week. Altoona residents are welcome to drop off tree debris, however, no contractors will be allowed. This is for residents only. If you are unable to get to the drop off location curbside pick up will be offered beginning Monday, August 17th. Please have your branches and brush at the curb by 6:00 a.m. City crews will begin collecting at 6:00 a.m. It may take a while for the city crews to pick up your debris so please exercise some patience.

    The brush drop off location is at 1200 Venbury Dr, Altoona.

    Spring Clean Up Days
    Finally, the spring clean up days has rescheduled. This is a great opportunity to get rid of items in your home that would not normally fit in your garbage can. Just about anything can be placed at your curb for pick up. The only items that will not be collected are appliances, hazardous waste, or tires. TV's, computers, and paint will be collected and recycled for a fee.

    If you live south of the railroad tracks and your normal garbage collection day is Monday your curbside clean up day is July 11th. If you reside north of the tracks and your normal garbage collection day is Tuesday you can place your pick up items curbside on July 18th.

    All items should be placed at the curb on your designated day by 6:00 a.m. Crews will make one pass through the neighborhoods. If you have questions on items being collected please contact Metro Waste for further clarification. Only residents on city services are eligible to participate.

Rain barrels collect and store rainwater which can then be used for watering gardens, plants, and lawns. By utilizing this process the amount of water runoff into the stormwater system is greatly reduced during rainfalls.     As you know the Covid-19 virus has caused many closures and opening delays for local businesses. Adventureland Amusement Park has also experienced a delayed season opening. Currently the park is planning on reopening in June 2020. The opening might be subject to further changes based on recommendations from the State and Iowa Departments of Public Health. Any further operational updates will be posted on Facebook and the park website. Season pass processing dates will be announced at a later date.

    If you are a 2020 season pass holder who purchased a pass prior to May 1st you will be issued a rebate for each operating day missed due to the State mandated Covid shutdown.

    Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all city offices for Altoona remain closed to the general public. Even with this crisis water bills are still due by 4:30 p.m. on the third of each month. There are several options available to make these payments even with the city offices closed.

    Cash or check payments can be made at the Hy-Vee customer service counter until 3:00 p.m. on the third of each month.

    Cash, check, or money order payments can be dropped in the 24-hour payment drop box at City Hall. Please use an envelope provided in the box.

    Online payments can be made with a debit or credit card. You will need your account number and last payment amount for this to be processed. There is a $1.25 processing fee for this type of payment.

    Auto pay is available which will directly debit your checking or savings account for your utility payment on the due date. Registration for this type of payment service is required.

    Phone payments are also accepted. You will need your account number and address to process this payment. There is a $1.25 processing fee for utilizing this form of payment. Phone payments are accepted by calling 833-271-0804.

    Brick & Ivy Rooftop, Altoona's newest restaurant still opened even with the coronavirus pandemic and restaurant restrictions in place from Governor Kim Reynolds. The goal was to open this month after they decided a year ago to build Brick & Ivy Rooftop. The first customer was served yesterday. Unfortunately the first customers were not allowed inside the dining room or on the rooftop. All orders were taken over the phone and delivered curbside like many of the other restaurants in Iowa. Right now all business have to adapt to the new regulations, an unexpected change. If you are looking for take out the Brick & Ivy Rooftop is open for take out business. Give them a try!

    The City of Altoona will be selling a limited supply of trees to residents. Tree varieties being offered for sale are Hackberry, Honeylocust, Crimson Sunset Maple, and Norway Spruce. These trees are 3/4" caliper and are placed in a 7 or 10 gallon pot. The cost per tree is $30 and there is a limit of two per household. Pre-sale of the trees begins March 4, 2020 at the Altoona City Hall.

    Did you know the City of Altoona has installed colored lights on the west water tower near Bass Pro Shop on Adventureland Dr? Nightly you can see a different light show that is controlled by the Public Utilities office. These lights can also be programmed for any personal or public event. For a $50 fee you can customize the light show and have it displayed on the date and time of your choosing. If you want to customize the water tower light show just contact Altoona City Hall.

    The City of Altoona has partnered with Metro Waste Authority to bring a new cardboard recycling center to the community. With the growing number of online shoppers the need for additional cardboard recycling was growing. The new drop-off site is located at 1200 Venbury Dr in Altoona, which is also the location of the aquatic center. The recycling container will be located in the northwest corner next to the skate park.

    This container can be accessed 24/7. Please remove all packing materials and flatten the box before recycling. Of course cardboard can also be placed in your home recycling cart. However, for those times when your cart is full this is a great alternative spot for recycling cardboard only.

    July 1, 2019 is the opening day for Altoona's favorite hot spot, The Sugar Shack. Plan to find all of your old favorites along with some new additions to the menu. The new location will keep the feel and vibe of the old spot but with new fresh decorating and colors. I for one can't wait to give this old but new restaurant a try!
